Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) is a professional who has expertise in handling the Red Hat Enterprise Linux System.  The Certified Engineer takes care of various tasks such as setting kernel runtime parameters, handling various types of system logging and providing certain kinds of network operability. The professionals must have the ability to install networking services and security on servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

The professional must have a proper understanding of the hardware and its limitations. They play an active role in configuring and monitoring the common enterprise network (IP) services.  It is the responsibility of the Red Hat Certified Engineer to handle the Red Hat Linux System Administration. The Certified Engineer has over the installation of basic networking and file system for a network.

Red Hat Certified Engineer will carry out server diagnostics and troubleshooting. They must configure the X Window System and Red Hat Linux. The professional is responsible for the static routes, packet filtering, and network address translation. The Certified Engineer must be able to use shell scripting to automate system maintenance tasks. They produce and deliver report on system utilization. The professionals have an essential role in setting up the Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) initiator.

The professional will offer networking services such as HTTP/HTTPS, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), network file system (NFS), server message block (SMB), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), secure shell (SSH) and Network Time Protocol (NTP). Red Hat Certified Engineer makes use of network teaming or bonding to setup aggregated network links between two Red Hat Enterprise Linux Systems.
